Australia is a multicultural nation, yet this diversity is not reflected in the leadership of the built environment industry. Senior leadership and boardrooms remain dominated by Anglo-Celtic backgrounds, with minimal representation of Culturally and Racially Marginalised (CARM) professionals.
Multicultural staff face barriers including perceptual bias, structural exclusion, limited role models, and sponsorship gaps. “True diversity” requires leadership that reflects Australia’s society, acknowledging intersectionality and valuing different expressions of ambition. Without inclusive leadership, organisations risk groupthink, weakened community engagement, and loss of talent. Closing this gap is not just fairness, but a strategic necessity for innovation, growth, and credibility.
