Background and Inspiration: Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in the property and construction industry?
Growing up in Europe, I was fortunate to be surrounded by remarkable architectural styles and iconic buildings. The understated elegance of Romanesque architecture captured my attention and sparked my passion for construction at a young age. As I grew older, I began to see construction not only as a technically demanding field but also as one deeply rooted in collaboration and human connection. It’s an industry where technical expertise must blend seamlessly with an understanding of people, and that dynamic is what truly inspired me to pursue a career in property and construction.
Leadership and Diversity: How do you integrate your cultural background into your leadership style, or how do you advocate for diversity and inclusion within the industry?
I believe that performance is the ultimate equaliser. Regardless of background, anyone who demonstrates a solid commitment to excellence will always have my full support in advancing their career in our industry. I prioritise fostering an environment where talent, hard work, and dedication are valued above all else. By advocating for diversity and inclusion, I aim to ensure everyone can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives, helping to build a stronger, more inclusive industry.
Advice for Aspiring Professionals: What advice would you give to young professionals from multicultural backgrounds who aspire to leadership roles in the property and construction industry?
In a performance-driven industry like ours, perseverance and a strong work ethic are essential to success. Regardless of your background, those who consistently demonstrate these qualities will find opportunities to progress and step into leadership roles. It's important to remember that these opportunities don't come overnight. They result from years of learning, dedication, and contributing to the growth of the companies you are part of. Stay committed to continuous development; your efforts will be recognised and rewarded over time.
Future Vision: In your opinion, how can the property and construction industry better support multiculturalism?
The property and construction industry can better support multiculturalism by recognising the value of professionals with overseas qualifications and experience. Despite lacking Australian tertiary education, many skilled candidates bring immense potential and relevant expertise. Establishing a dedicated body to assist with their transition—offering tailored advice, mentorship, and support—would help integrate these professionals into the industry, enriching it with diverse perspectives and talent.
Cultural Celebrations: Can you share a significant cultural celebration or festival from your heritage that holds special meaning for you?
My kids and I celebrate Epiphany Day on January 6th each year. It's a special tradition where they leave their shoes by the Christmas tree, hoping the Three Wise Men will leave gifts overnight. It’s a joyful moment, blending heritage and excitement and a cherished family celebration each year.
