Patricia Djojopranoto is proudly Indonesian and currently serves as Senior Associate at Slattery Australia.
Background and Inspiration: Could you share your journey into the property and construction industry and the key experiences that shaped your passion for this field?
Coming to boarding school in Australia as a 14 year old and being the only student with an Indonesian background, I found my initial years challenging as I learned how to adapt to Australian life to be accepted. I’ve often drawn on this experience when I help others assimilate into their new lives.
I always had a strong interest in mathematics, physics and how things are built so decided to study Architecture at the University of Melbourne. I soon realised that my true passion lay in the analytical and structural side of building design and transferred to the Property and Construction program.
In my final year at university, I got my first professional role as a cadet quantity surveyor. I realised this role suited me perfectly, as it allowed me to combine my love for numbers with my interest in building construction. That experience confirmed my passion for the property and construction industry, and I’ve never looked back. Working in property consulting provides an ideal environment for women, offering a balanced combination of practical site experience and office-based work.
The greatest rewards for me come from partnering with colleagues and clients to deliver projects that benefit our communities.
Leadership Strategies: In your leadership role, what strategies do you use to incorporate diverse cultural perspectives, and how do these align with-or differ from-approaches you see in the wider industry?
Having lived internationally, including spending a decade in Los Angeles, I bring a broad perspective and an understanding of diverse mindsets. This global outlook enriches my mentorship approach and has shaped how I connect with others.
Leadership is not just about managing workload but connecting with others on a human level, showing compassion and leading with empathy. Embracing my culture identity helps me foster an inclusive and supportive environment that champions diversity.
At Slattery, diversity is a lived experience that shapes how we collaborate, solve problems and grow. Recognising diversity is key to effective leadership. I take a personalised approach and engage with each team member to understand their individual motivations providing support that aligns with their personal and professional development aspirations.
The key to incorporating cultural diversity is listening and creating an environment where people feel safe to share. I encourage everyone to engage with other people’s cultural backgrounds and to immerse in and embrace cultural differences.
Future Vision: Looking ahead, what changes or initiatives do you believe would have the most impact in helping the property and construction industry better embrace multiculturalism?
Incorporating diverse cultural perspectives begins with intentional listening and creating a safe space where every voice feels valued. We need to continue to be open to others’ cultural backgrounds and embrace the richness that comes from difference. True multiculturalism is not simply about representation; it’s about connection, curiosity, and mutual respect.
Multicultural Association of Property Professionals (MAPP) Inc. acknowledges the enduring connection of First Nations Australians as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters across Australia, with a special recognition of the Kulin nation peoples within the area where MAPP Inc. operates. We pay our respects to the Elders, both past and present, of Country, and honour the cultural diversity within First Nations peoples.
